Position Description

Position: Full Time Travel Resource Nurse - Registered Nurse RN

Location: Mid-Michigan based

Classification: Full-Time, Salaried Position

SUMMARY:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Timely and accurately assess, plan, and deliver nursing care to detained and committed patients.
  • Administer prescribed medication, treatments, and other tasks, as ordered by the practitioner.
  • Provide emergency first aid care when appropriate.
  • Check and record vital signs, peak flows, blood glucose checks, weight, and other diagnostic tests on-site, when appropriate.
  • Triage officer intake screenings for necessity and priority at sick call.
  • Record information in chronic clinic and outcome study documents.
  • Report reactions to treatments and medications, as well as changes in the patients’ emotional or physical condition.
  • Provide patient education and discharge planning.
  • Record care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
  • Collaborate and coordinate multiple medical services for diagnosis and treatment as directed by the practitioner.
  • Maintain aseptic techniques and infection control precautions, as required.
  • Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of pharmacology, including drug reaction/overdose.
  • Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition.
  • Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of social and behavioral sciences, particularly as applied to the correctional institutional setting.
  • Recommend improved procedures, equipment, and supplies to your supervisor.
  • Notify supervisor of medical or security incidents.
  • Participate in in-service education sessions.
  • Perform duties within the scope of practice mandated by state and local standards.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA practices as required by government agencies.
  • Work as site nurse to assist correctional facility in covering staffing shortages.
  • Report identified facility issues to your supervisor and implement a plan for resolution.
  • Acquire professional licensure as directed.
  • May be asked to train new hires and coworkers.
  • Responsible for acquiring and maintaining AIMM electronic Medical Records (EMR) Superuser status.
  • Always maintain professional attitude.
  • Work collaboratively and courteously with team members.
  • Assist the facility in covering staffing shortages.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor certification; hands-on training.
  • CCHP Certification essential within two years.

· Perform all other duties as assigned.

TRAINING EXPECTATIONS:

Associates in this role are expected, as a condition of employment, to complete all training assigned within a reasonable time, generally within less than 15 days. This role includes the following training requirements:

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (emotional quotient; EQ):

To be successful in the organization, associates should have a high EQ. This is necessary to communicate productively, to build and maintain relationships, to recognize and reduce stress, to defuse conflict situations and to increase job satisfaction.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

This is not a supervisory position. This position does not have the authority to hire, fire, discipline, discharge, assign overtime, and/or direct and assign work, or the ability to effectively recommend any of these actions. This role also serves as a coach and mentor for other employees.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This role operates in a jail facility or similar setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Incumbent will be exposed to virus, disease and infection from patients and specimens in working environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires the ability to push, pull, and move medication carts of approximately 50 pounds on wheels. In addition, driving and intermittent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and lifting and supporting patients is required.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

TRAVEL:

This position requires travel.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • RN with active nursing license in good standing within the state(s) in which services are to be provided.
  • 5+ years of nursing experience required.
  • 3+ years of relevant management or supervisor experience in healthcare, corrections, ICU, ER or Med/Surg environment preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; hands-on training required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor certification; hands-on training preferred.
  • CCHP Certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of the RN and LPN scope of practice.
  • Strong Microsoft Office, Internet, and email skills.
  • Must be able to drive a motor vehicle.
