Position Description
A SAFE RN is a registered nurse with advanced education and clinical preparation in forensic nursing. A SAFE RN conducts forensic examinations, collects and preserves evidence, and testifies in legal proceedings. The SAFE RN is knowledgeable in the nursing process and its application to the Forensic Nursing specialty. A thorough and detailed exam is performed while restoring dignity to the patient, by providing compassionate and comprehensive care, teaching, and information for follow up care.
Responsibilities
Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):
Graduated from an accredited/approved school of nursing. Current RN and SANE license required in the state of Kentucky.
One year RN experience required. Preferred minimum of two years clinical experience in any of the following areas: Emergency, Intensive Care, Pediatric, Maternal Child, Psychiatric and/or Forensic Nursing. Preferred experience in Domestic Violence training. Mastery of verbal and written communications skills preferred.
Responsibilities
- Provides forensic nursing care to crime victims at UofL Hospital, The Center for Women and Families SAFE Clinic, and/or other partnering facilities and locations.
- Develops Plan of Care reflective of current body of knowledge relating to forensic nursing care.
- Administers medications/drugs as appropriate to exam findings.
- Completes forensic examinations as indicated, provides discharge and follow-up care instructions and maintains chain of custody per ethical and/or legal statutes.
- Practices victim/patient-centered care to meet the needs of internal and external customers.
- Supports advocate role of Center for Women and Families and uses advocates as team members.
- Communicates professionally with law enforcement to achieve patient’s desired legal outcomes.
- Participates in ongoing legal process and court appearances as required by state statutes.
- Maintains patient confidentiality as required by hospital policy and Kentucky law.
- Follows the chain of command to address concerns in care of the patient.
- Performs other duties assigned by authorized personnel or as required to meet the needs of the hospital or center, and internal and external customers.
